The Jnanpith Award is one of the highest literary awards in India. Named the Bharatiya Jnanpith Award, it includes a bronze sculpture of Goddess Saraswati, a certificate and a check for Rs 11 lakh. Although not an official award of the Government, the Jnanpith Award is considered to be the highest recognition in the field of literature in India, along with the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship.
The award is presented by the Jnanpith Trust, founded by the Sahu Jain family, which owns the Times of India Group. The award is considered for the author's comprehensive literary contribution since 1982.
The first prize was won in 1965 for G. Sankarakuruppu's collection of poems'Odakkuzhal'. The prize money, which was Rs 1 lakh in 1965, is now Rs 11 lakh.

The first poet in Malayalam, G Shankara Kurup, received the award in 1965. After that, S.K. Pottakkad (1980), Takashi Sivasankarappilla (1984), MT Vasudevan Nair (1995), ONV. Kurup (2007) and Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri (2019) also won the Jnanpith Award for their contributions to Malayalam literature.
The last time Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri won the award was in 2019.
